Monster Hunter 3
See the world, meet dangerous monsters and fashion their skin into hats. Anyone else grab Monster Hunter 3?
My character currently looks like a giant pink teddy bear because of that Rhenoplos armor (pro: Materials easy to get, con: Makes you look like you work in a theme park).

is the game any good? was thinking of getting it
Re: Monster Hunter 3
Yeah, I like it. There's some complex stuff in there but fortunately they explain stuff to you before it gets serious.

Re: Monster Hunter 3
The original on the PS2 was my favorite PS2 game. Been anxiously waiting for a state-side console release for a sequel... finally got it. Bought a Wii just to play it.
I'm still trying to iron out single player, but when I start to hit the multiplayer I'd play with you. My ID thing is E6MFJV.
The game is great in my opinion. It requires more skill and knowledge to be good at than hard grinding. There is a lot to know, but they do ease you into it. You should definitely give it a try if you're curious.

I'm considering picking it up when I finish Rune Factory: Frontier.

I own MH for the PSP. It's quite nice, and I've heard MH3 is even better.

Re: Monster Hunter 3
I can confidently say MH is a series that belongs on a console. It's numerous ports to the PSP are just limiting the potential for the game. This is the first time since the PS2 that it's had enough buttons!

Nice. I never much cared for Tigrex myself. I liked the Tyrannosaurus Rex motiff, but it was always just such a pain to fight.

Re: Monster Hunter 3
And last night I just fought Barioth for the first time, from MH3. A lot like Tigrex, only much more of a jerk. Not thrilled.
Didn't make it either =(
So, Monster Hunters, what are your guys' favorite wyverns, weapons, all that jazz?
Myself, Diablos is my favorite, both to fight and just from a design point of view. In the PS2 days I lanced mostly, as did almost everyone, but later on I was one of the few who discovered the potential of the short sword before it apparently caught on in the PSP. Now on the Wii I use the short sword mostly, reveling in the fact I can use my beloved R stick to attack again.

Re: Monster Hunter 3
I like dual claws and longsword for sheer speed and attack power, I never got the hang of the GS.
I love the way cephali look, but I don't have a favorite-to-fight wyvern. I love fighting the crabs, because I don't really have to aim my blows to hurt them.
My absolute favorite monsters to fight would probably be Blangonga, Shogun, Chameleos, and Lunastra.
-------------------------------------------------
I'll also take this opportunity to explain why I probably won't be buying MH3 anytime soon.
I own 6 displays. Only one them has a composite input. This is an ancient 30" CRT TV that has gigantic pixels, weighs >100 lbs, and is 2 floors away from all of my other major forms of entertainment.
Not my TV
I will not play monster hunter on that TV, so until I am able to connect my Nintendo Wii to a VGA, DVI, or HDMI input. I'll have to abstain from purchasing Monster Hunter 3.
End rant.

Re: Monster Hunter 3
I'm guessing you don't have a typical RCA input of any kind. That's a shame. Or if you're just demanding HD input, then I think that's silly, as it actually looks worse when going into HD. But I'll assume you've got a hold on your situation.
The crabs were pretty fun to fight, which sort of surprised me. I didn't like fighting Lunastra and most of the other dragons. Not sure why. Maybe it was because it was on the PSP.
The longsword is pretty fun too.

Ooooh, component is the other one isn't it, with the green and whatnot.
I always get that mixed up. Words are way too similar.

Re: Monster Hunter 3
Call composite NTSC. Makes you sound cooler too.
Re: Monster Hunter 3
Composite can also be used to transmit PAL & SECAM.
Also back on the rails:
I never played MonsterHunt, but isn't it a RPG+Pokemon combo? Has it any story or do you just kill poor animals for fun?

Re: Monster Hunter 3
Waiting for the PSP english version.
jK: pokemon? the only connection to pokemon that MH has is.... monsters. But in MH, all you do is kill them (or capture then later kill them) and cut off their dangly bits to make fancy hats and waistcoats.
Its more of a PvE grindy sort of game, like an MMO without actually requiring more than one player.
One thing that really bugged me about this game is that the nicer looking armor had crappy stats and/or some unwelcome drawbacks, while the ugly armor sets had better stats and useful special abilities.

Re: Monster Hunter 3
I can only speak for Monster Hunter 2 on the PSP.SanadaUjiosan wrote: So, Monster Hunters, what are your guys' favorite wyverns, weapons, all that jazz?
First of all, this game is basically a MMORPG. I got "powerleveled" to HR 9 by just tagging along with fellow hunters while having ridiculously weak equipment and without making any significant effort.
Meanwhile, I almost completed my guildcard though, including all the download quests, and almost all king and mini crowns.
Anything you do with a decent team is pretty easy imo, but very fun, and a good way to get the mats for the really good weapons and armor. The really hard part of the game is the singleplayer stuff. Not being able to take a little breath behind your partners back and mindlessly shlashing away at the monster while it attacks your partners really ramps up the challenge. Some single player training missions drove me mad with frustration, I often spent days and a lot of my nerves just to complete one training (Kirin training, Tigrex training, g-rank training, etc.). As a beginner, I got stuck with Khezu training for a long time (damn charged jump attack). But I can really recommend everyone to complete the training. It is tedious, but you will notice it really improves your skills.
The toughest multiplayer challenges are probably the "Fiesta" download quests, where you have to take down a very strong monster in the arena with only 2 players plus a tough time limit, but you have 5 (instead of 3) lives. In these quests I had my finest hour when me and some Japanese player took down a Rajang with a Longsword and Bow (you can't select GS or Hammer for this quest). I don't know how I managed it, but I went crazy and somehow managed to attack in every small opening and then rolling towards him to evade his attack. It was insane, but we made it before the time limit.
Another fun download quest is the "Naked Plesioth", which can be easily done with HBGs, but me and my team managed to break the time record all equipped with Gunlances. Another memorable fight.
Monster Hunter is definitely one hell of a hard game (that's why it's so good), while being sleek, stylish and atmospheric as hell, and incredibly well designed (controls, weapons). Plus. the monsters are actually fearsome, and the fights seem "real". My favorite is probably the Tigrex. With all other monsters I have the feeling I could somehow escape them if I met them in real life (lol delusional), but when you see the Tigrex in the open desert preparing his charge, you know it's game over.
I was a long term Long Sword user, but once I discovered the Hammer charge attack (I only knew it's crappy spin charge for a long time) I realized it's definitly one of the best, strongest weapons, and the quickest, easiest way to take down most monsters. Only the Greatsword is better in some cases, but harder to use. Lances are great too against some monsters, like Plesioth or Khezu. I also love supporting my team with a light Bowgun and stun shots. Dualswords are in my opinion the worst weapons, except for some really slow monsters like Chameleos or Lao. Same goes for SnS, which is terribly weak, but can be useful in teams, since some weapons do good status damage (stun, etc).
Exactly that thought was what kept me from the looking at this game for while. the term "monster" is just tainted by pokemon, digimon etc. so much..jK wrote: isn't it a RPG+Pokemon combo
