ea and mythic studios are horrible companies

basically they made multiple, subscription fee charges to pretty much all their subscribers accounts, as well as some people who hadn't been subscribed in ages, then are being wankers about paying them back. we're talking being charged say at least $200, often a lot more. then there's the massive overdraft fees people end up with

the thing that's just awful though? they're slowly refunding people to a certain extent, although obviously not the overdraft fees, but they're taking one of these repayments off (charged 11x? get 10x back). why? to pay for a month's sub of course! even if you aren't actually subscribed or anything

classy.

According to the email I saw that got sent out they are attempting to reverse all charges within 36 hours, and they have a process in place for reversing draft charges. Draft charges aren't reversed automatically, of course, however, if you contact your financial institution and they can't or won't recredit you then there is a method in place to refund those costs.

Most banks are supposed to have policies in place to deal with this kind of thing.

"Most" banks? "Supposed to"? That's a pretty big generalization, different countries have different laws and different levels and qualities of government involvement in banking practices.

This kind of thing shouldn't happen at all. It's like that time when hundreds of thousands of peoples' banking information was leaked (paypal?), the tolerance for such massive errors has to be zero.

I'm probably more irritated by hearing about this than most people since I've gone through the mess of correcting this kind of issue once. Someone overcharged one of my credit cards by adding an extra digit to the price of something, but it wasn't a huge purchase begin with so it went through. Like anyone, didn't bother to check the receipt, just signed it and walked away.

Then my car payment, insurance payment, energy bill, gas bill, mother's mortgage bill, rent, phone bill, cell bill, and other things tried to automatically pay themselves and it was a shitstorm. Bank's calling me, the aforementioned parties calling me, one of them put it to collections without bothering to call, credit score destroyed, holy crap what a mess. It took like a month to clean up and my credit score's still not back to what it used to be even though I have significantly more equity than I did back then.

Credit agencies use crazy black magic to determine your worth and it's practically impossible to get anything productive done with them. A little while ago I got a credit report and it said I was still a general labourer at my brother's cleaning company - from like 2003 or something when I first applied for a bank account. With that barely 4-figure annual pay, they'd somehow worked out that my credit score was 820 out of a possible 900, putting me in the top 2% or something. And this was the trustworthy basis for me being allowed to buy a car!

Maybe Canada's made it through the recession so well because nobody's actually bothered to update credit scores in the last decade.

So, yeah I should've been more attentive but you don't expect these kinds of things to happen, and you shouldn't have to either.

The system used to pay on the internet is deeply flawed. Everytime we buy something of the internet, we're basically saying: Here's my treasure chest. Please help yourself. Take whatever you want whenever you want.

Well, except that with an actual treasure chest, they couldn't take more than you have. And you'd see them enter and leaving the treasure room. So it's in reality worse. It's not even a like blank check, as a blank check can only be used once. We're just giving random companies across the world the power the ransack us. I'm actually surprised case like mythic studio overcharging don't happen more often.

I wish banks would get their act together and deploy a system where the guy whose money will be drawn is asked before each withdrawal.

My bank already does that on some sites. In fact, I recently won a trip to Florida for my 1,000,000th transaction!
