Happiness Research..
...which made me very unhappy! You ve got to hate research that produces such unclear results, pretending that happiness is everything and (sometimes) unhappy acomplishments are worthless.

Re: Happiness Research..
maybe winners just did not want to appear as shallow minded "i haz money now i is happy" people to the interviewer and to themself too.The [lottery] winners considered themselves no happier at the time of the interviews than the members of the control group did. In the future, the winners expected to become slightly happier, but, once again, no more so than the control-group members
Re: Happiness Research..
I would be happier if I was had lots of money... mostly because my wife wouldn't harp on me for the not having of money.
Re: Happiness Research..
I have a theory that once you run out of goals to accomplish, you start to go dramatically downhill, physically and mentally. Or maybe not so much "goals", but "motivation".
You know, like the way that they say cancer patients with a good attitude are more likely to survive.
Your whole life growing up, you're anxious for the next day because everything is new and exciting. Well, this is complete bullshit... but, I mean, generally you have things you look forward to.
Things like, being able to drive, being able to drink, finishing school, your first job, your first car, etc.
Then, at some point, you are declared to be in the age of majority and all the doors are opened to you and it's like, "oh... well... so what now?"
Being rich is like having cheats turned on. Now you don't have to work for anything anymore, or at least not nearly as hard. What's left?
People need challenges in their lives, monotony and boredom will be the death of you. This is why I love modding solo so much, it's a big challenge and it seems counterproductive to me to share that with someone.

Re: Happiness Research..
Goals, you say? I think I can think up a few for you guys. Lets start by remaking all of the TA models in highpoly with normalmapped lowpoly bakes.

The problem is how to make people happy without resorting to 1984 or Utopia levels of self-inflicted douchebaggery... my current theory is finding a drug that will artificially trigger the human "motivation" reflex.

Or if you're just in the need for something to do, may I recommend trolling Smoth? I'll be damned if that sentence wasn't the most rewarding thing I've typed all day.

It's gotten harder to troll Smoth since he stopped posting here in february... I'd troll his home-forums but he's really hard to flame bait when he already hates me... when he just assumes I'm a douche it becomes impossible to egg him on.Caydr wrote:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nootropic

Also, trolling is wrong and you shouldn't do it.

Well then start testing different drugs till you find a good one.SinbadEV wrote:The problem is how to make people happy without resorting to 1984 or Utopia levels of self-inflicted douchebaggery... my current theory is finding a drug that will artificially trigger the human "motivation" reflex.
Or how about finding something that triggers the human "motivation" reflex unartificially.
Re: Happiness Research..
If happiness was directly proportional to material wealth, and considering that not all cavemen have commited suicide out of despair, then in this early twenty first century, everybody should be orgasming not stop.
Re: Happiness Research..
One would imagine that Happiness is tied to relative comfort... if everyone is living in cold damp caves then the dude with fire is probably happier... which makes the whole thing a load of BS... people are happy because certain situations release endorphins etc... The only way Money CAN improve a persons happiness is if that person uses that money to do more things that cause those natural happiness drugs to be produced... which is why most rich people end up dying from drug/alcohol-use or end up in sex scandals... They should have spent that money on eating healthy food, spending time with good friends and engaging in fun active activities, and challenging their minds with interesting literature, art and movies.zwzsg wrote:If happiness was directly proportional to material wealth, and considering that not all cavemen have commited suicide out of despair, then in this early twenty first century, everybody should be orgasming not stop.

More rich people spend money on eating healthy food, engaging in fun active activities, and challenging their mind with interesting literature, art and movies than poor people.
More poor people end up dying from alcohol use than rich people.
As for the sex, the only difference is that poor people aren't followed by paparazzi so can have affairs without them being made into scandals.

Re: Happiness Research..
I've heard that an emotion associated with happiness is joy, but that not every culture's people experience joy. I'm sure that happiness is a very relative thing.

Re: Happiness Research..
Happiness and joy are fairly synonymous to the american dialect. Christian philosophers will make a distinction claiming that joy is an underlying satisfaction with your life that comes from God.
I think, ultimately, the whole process is pretty complex, and I don't put alot of weight into the value of happiness. I try to find other reasons to do the things I want to do other than "it's going to make me happy" because I don't worship happiness very much.
I tend to believe joy is implicate if you choose it, and the other stuff is just a roller coaster you go up and down on based on chemicals in your brain.

I know somebody who has enough money to never worry again, yet all he does is whine problems are everywhere blabla.SinbadEV wrote: The only way Money CAN improve a persons happiness is if that person uses that money to do more things that cause those natural happiness drugs to be produced...
Re: Happiness Research..
Of course problems are everywhere. Now that he has his money he needs to defend it in this lightly veiled grand melee against all comers.
Re: Happiness Research..
If you don't have money, you have to constantly worry how to get it
If you have money, you have to constantly worry about what to do with it

Re: Happiness Research..
I think the brain really gets bored if everything is ok then new problems have to be found.
Maybe were not made for enviroments where were not in danger at all.
I think if I had enough money not to worry I'd just do what I want without making artificial problems for myself.
But Im a lazy person, I dont need any purpose or work or activity to feel whole.
