Re: Map contest
dont listen to Basic just make maps you enjoy making :]
Re: Map contest
because all this thread is about is that Yan wanted a map so he makes a contest rather then just asking for a certain style of map.Tribulex wrote:Dude, are you doing ANYTHING? I hate to be flamish, but all I see you doing is commenting on the maps we are working on, and having fun being the big contest maker boy. I am not sure why, but every post you post makes me mad.Gota wrote:ironized i suggest u make it smaller.
About the map:
Does spring have problems with excessively deep water?
Re: Map contest
We're going to start a new contst now, its called who can make the greatest check for a million dollars! Contestants send their check to me via the mail by the end of the week and Ill get back to you in 2 weeks time
Re: Map contest
OH OH! ME TO I wants to be a judge also, the checks should be made payable to the gundam RTS development fund.
Re: Map contest
I suggested the map to be smaller cause 32x16 maps are hard to play, cause of lag an requirments and im sure a mapper wants to see his map getting played a lot.
This contest wasnt about me,im just trying to encourage map making while giving the winning map some exposure which is hard to get in spring.
Thats it,thats why i was so flexible with the rules, cause the main point was people making maps and i dont want anything to stop that from happening thus i cave in to any demends by mappers.
Those of you who enjoy trolling can go on doing that but than you are denying yoursleves the right to lash out at others that do the same.

Re: Map contest
OH NO YAN of all people called me a troll.
A map contest on a forum will not give any exposure, it is tried and true that if you want people to know your map exists you have to host many games of it. People have to see it, play on it etc.

Re: Map contest
So true smoth... so true
Ok new rule, you can play deltasiege, tabula, or small supreme, all other maps are considered a rebellion and must not be played.
Don't you love the spring community, I live in a country with 4 billion sheep, and I swear to god this community defines the word sheep... Baaaahhh must follow others baaaaaaahhh
Nuff said, version 1 of my map will be released in an hour or so
(or how ever long it takes mapconv to actually produce a non-fail result... I swear it only works 1 in every 10 goes)

Re: Map contest
ok mapconv is failing me
mapconv -c 0.5 -x 800 -n -100 -o SpringMountainDelta.smf -t texturev1.tif -a heightv1.tif -f featurev1.tif -m metalv1.tif -i -l -q100
tried with pngs aswell... never had this problem
It's making an smt size of like 600 kb, should be... 20-40 meg from the last one

I dont get it.
I wrote in the begining that the winning map wil be hosted on all of neddies servers for 24 hours. That is exposure.
Neddie kindly agreed to it.That is the reason for this contest, a chance to expose your map,if so many servers host it it will draw attention for sure.
Re: Map contest
That will draw some attention to it yan, but there have to be people on the server, the host has to engage people. People in spring like nixa said are sheep, they will play a map if other people tell them it is a good idea. Past that it is hard to get people to play a map. Most people in the lobby do not even know about this forum.
You can sit there and try and pull people into your game with the map you have. After a few days, if the map isn't utter shit, people might embrace it. However, it take a lot of campaigning to get your map played. HunterW used to host a lot of "testing" matches for his maps and people would join to try the "new and interesting maps." Even if the map was already released.
Simply put this community is the most stubborn group of people that I have seen. It is hard to get people to play anything new and if they have to download something, oh god the bitching starts.

Re: Map contest
I agree with smoth. I think that my maps would have lost in time and space if i would havent been able to host a lot of games with them...
The pure fact is that play rate of the map grows exponential. The more people play the map, more they will stick up with it and dont want to try anything new... DSD is good example... map is way overplayed but still no one gets bored of it. It has a status as well known map which everyone has played.

Re: Map contest
I think that neddie hosting a map on all servers will make a differance,at least we will try.
Wont hurt, than we can see and we wont have to guess or speculate.

Re: Map contest
this isn't guessing or speculation. This is observed fact over the past 2+ years.
Re: Map contest
If the contest it still running, I would like to submit my map, Contested Canyon.
Re: Map contest
Smoth is right - maps have the same problem mods face.... it's too much of a waste to go downloading one. Less than mods, but still - I have to download the (often 20+ megs of map) over my lite dsl. Then I have to learn the map while more experienced players make me their bitch for a few games. And after all that, I might decide that the map really wasn't any good, and at that point I really could've just saved the time and avoided the process. Even if it's good, I can't reapply the knowledge I've learned in later games, since nobody will ever play it again with me, 'cause nobody ELSE plays new maps, even if I want to go exploring. And if I encourage them to try it with me, I have to wait for them to download and path the damned thing.
Each of these problems are solvable. A good ratings site would help us separate the wheat from the chaff. Mappers being more interested in fize would solve the download size. And clearer maps that don't have weird, unexpected tricks would make the learning curve nicer. After all, what fun is playing a map and having a good game and then getting shredded when a swarm of kbots rushes into your base through a pass that you quite reasonably thought was impassable? Building a sub and finding out the water is too shallow? Building kbots to climb slopes that looked too steep for vehicles, but weren't?
