Re: TASclient
Evrythinging has to be in the face and simplistic...otherwise noobs fail.
Re: TASclient
content files and the connect button were a little unintuitive for me. is connect on join on by default?
I think one of the most useful thing for noobs would be noob specific games. Currently this is not possible due to the 'rank limit' setting being a maximum not a minimum.
noobs fighting noobs have fun and learn the game together. The big battles which are generally on offer can be confusing and prone to technical problems (crash/lag/droppers etc). If a noob joins, the battle will often get bigger as the the balance works better. If the popular game has a rank limit set then the game is not even an option.
I hosted a number of games called 'noobish' and was surprised at the rate of people joining. noobs look through the battle list and read the descriptions and look for an easy going game rather than join the game thats gonna get 12 players the quickest. Biggest problem was the influx of silver/gold medal players jumping on the first game they saw that had a few players which either changed the game from a friendly, easy-going 2v2 to a 6+ flash-rush or it meant the spots were filled by gold-medallers with noobs on spec asking what is going on.
max rank option. visible and obvious in games list. Experenced players teaching noobs is great, but everyone's got to know that its the noobs' room (writing 'noob' in the game description does not work, experienced players rarely read the description)
someone set up a noob specific autohost. that'd be great.

Re: TASclient
That looks ugly. It's easier to understand what it is, sure. imo, the whole thing should be replaced with a proper toolbar, but meh.
Re: TASclient
currently:
- single pixel outline around an indistinguishable button
what it should be:
- big green/red, on/off switch.
maybe there's an artist who can make it pretty..

Sorry, I was meaning to support your post. I figured the reference to big green button was enough.Satirik wrote:?? you missed my post or what ?
Re: TASclient
My first impression (a few weeks ago) was: wow, proper chat, lobby! By simply being there, the player list explains a lot about the full-featured chat functionality of the application. Don't expect a new user to enable it if its not showing by default (why would they think it even exists).Gota wrote:The userdoesnt need the player list he doesnt know anyone itsjust a feature that together with other clumsy issues like having to go to other websites to downlaod content makes him think twice about wasting allthis time into figuring everytihng out
Then I looked at teh list of games and didn't understand half of what was going on there (didn't know the symbols).. muddled through.
Oh, then I needed otacontent, that is a hurdle thats hardly mentioned anywhere and I'd guess a large percentage of new users hit it..

other suggestions:
- popup help page on first viewing.? Perhaps a little bit more introduction there. I don't care if I have to close it that once.. at least I know where to find a key to all the little symbols (as a M$ user the word 'Help' can be a big turnoff.. if I'm not told the key to the symbols is there I wouldn't ever bother clicking it).
- Change the name of the shortcut 'TasClient' to 'MultiplayerLobby' or something. Just cuts out another little cause of confusion.

edit: shortcut on my desktop says 'Spring Battleroom' but shortcut in my programs menu says 'TasClient'.
Re: TASclient
Yes pop up help tips that is a very good suggestion instead of the hlp section that nobody looks in.
Thx for your comments that exactly what is needed for new users to come and tell us what they found frustrating.

Re: TASclient
+1 To a big popup on the installer that explains what ota content is, why people will almost certainly need it and how to get it.
+1 The lovely power button for the lobby
Also, I think the lobby should sort games by status by default, so that the open games are sorted to the top of the list.
An option to hide passworded games could also be useful.

Re: TASclient
what page ? that's the question

Re: TASclient
I suggest allowing to remove sorting categories fom the room window.
By default there should be only mod and map name and the x/6 players.
When people play a few games and decide they like it and start messingwith options they can add other categories to their likin.
IMO It should be done simply by pressing wit hthe right mouse on the bar and a menu should appear with category names and checkboxes near.

Re: TASclient
As much as I like the idea about hideable columns, all the columns as are now are pretty important, with the exception of average player ranks. The join button column is pretty unimportant too, but that probably is there for simplicity. It just serves no real purpose to hide them either.Gota wrote:I suggest allowing to remove sorting categories fom the room window.

Re: TASclient
another feature for Noobs :

http://0.t.free.fr/quickJoinPanel.png
ofc you can hide that panel
the "play now" button try to join the battle with better ratio players/maxplayers
the "spectate now" try to join the first full battle or the battle with the better ratio players/maxplayers

Re: TASclient
wah, where I hide the ugliness?
Edit: oh there, confusing place to put it, really. With the bold text describing how to join games, get rid of the stupid join column?

Re: TASclient
Satirik can you make sure that "Play Now" button never points to my game?
Re: TASclient
Please drop the "Battle list (double click to join)" font down to normal size. Right now it acts as a huge distraction and always draws your eyes in. And I'm not finding this option to hide it either.
The power button's nice.

Re: TASclient
yeah i already reduced the double click to join font size :)
Re: TASclient
It's on the right click in the battle list, imo, a bit confusing, I would move it to interface options or something, but meh.lurker wrote:Please drop the "Battle list (double click to join)" font down to normal size.
