Is there an easy way for Lan Gaming?

Post by Rushpro1851 »

Here is the problem, I am at school, and a lot of us 8-10 are addicted to AOE, now we are talking about the FIRST AOE, Now we are looking for a new RTS, and Spring with the Star Wars mod is just the ticket, the only problem, is that most people do not know what an IP or "Host Name" is. I would like to know if there was some way to play lan games Like AOE with out the chat server. Don't get me wrong, it is an awesome idea, it's just that in a n00b envirment, it just doesn't work. Anyway, if there is any way to play with out the server and in an easy mannor, that would be great! (PS, Is there some kind of guide to the command line interface? If so, I might take a swing at creating a .NET p2p Game manager!

Can't help with your question (never LAN'd Spring) I generally find the lobby pretty easy for n00bs. The host just makes the game and tells the othe rplayers "look for this game in the game list - password is X". It'll prompt for the password when you try to join.

Still, I don't know how well lobby-launched Spring works when you're all behind a NAT.

Yea, the thing is, many people do not play spring at ALLL so they don't have the account to even join on to the main server. I know it is possable to create a server, but it would be a pain to tell every one which IPs to join.

Yeah, the lan server is a PITA. You can make an online account for Spring with very little effort though, just enter a name and password and it's done, no verifying emails or anything so it shouldn't be much trouble if you have a net connection.

imo if your friends arent knowlodgable enuff to figure out how to log onto springs online lobby

the rts's made for spring might be to much to handle

dont mean to offend you :P

its a pretty easy process and the lobby with pw is generally better than lan server if u all got inet

easy solution for lobby devs: make an option to start a lobby _server_ somewhere in your lobby client. shouldn't be hard.

on windows, java usually ends up on the PATH, and the server download isn't any harder than map downloads, amirite? ^^

It's kinda weird. I also find it TOO easy to create an account, and all that, but I am planing to play this at a Christian school, and after we had Kids playing Counter-Strike on the net (Which got the game removed :( ) We can't play it any more. (We also have like, 8 year olds playing it and the parents were not too impressed) Any way, Is there a site with all the different commands for it to run?
