config to play spring

Post by bashar »

Im about to buy a new PC ; i use it to do some stuff (internet/word) but no games....except spring.

So im looking for a config that is not too powerful (and so not too expensive) but enough to run spring with decent fps.

I d like to have opinion about :

CPU
RAM (MHz, amount of)
DisplayCard
OS (XP? Vista?)

============

thanks a lot

Why are you mixing a modern OS, an outdated dual core cpu, horrendous graphics, and ancient ram?

Vista doesnt belong on your machine. Some would argue neither does windows XP, thats an office machine, and not a very good one.

Well you could do something like this:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E4400 or something similar
RAM: 1/2 GB of some cheap DDR2
GPU:Nvidia GeForce 8500 GT or something similar
OS: Ubuntu (Linux) or Windows XP

You should be able to run Spring on the highest settings with a steady frame rate.

A geforce FX class gpu or later will do you well on spring although ideally a geforce 6 or later would be best.

People have been known to run spring on Geforce 4's and 3's although it is not reccomended.

With a 6600 or later, and the right settings.

Here

And like this.

You should be able to idle with 60-70 fps on most maps with a 2ghz processor. Maybe better depending on your other stuff. I change all of my settings to max (cept water) when I need to take a screenie or a load screen.

If you want a solid thirty FPS, I would get a Core Duo, a 7xxx series GeForce, a GB of RAM and a 7200 rpm+ HD.

Not sure how good you are with computers but I would get a P35 based motherboard and one of cheapest core 2 duos i.e. E4400 or even E2140 and overclock the shit out of it (you can usually double the mhz with a half decent cooler)

As for Graphics, avoid ATI, and I would recommend the Nvidia 7 series; 7900GS seems best value for money IMO and will run spring (and other games) beautifully (shop around, prices can vary significantly on graphics cards).

Cheap DDR2-6400 ram should allow you to overclock quite high, without having to use dividers. (1GB minimum, I would recommend 2*1GB matched)

OS - definetley windows xp (unless your up for installing linux..)

Also the P35 based motherboard will give you a nice upgrade path for penryn.

EDIT; meant P35 not G35 :P

I could install linux but i need windows cause my wife is not linux-compliant :p

I prefer XP cause I m not sure Vista is really so good.

I understand in these post that the really point is the gpu, not the cpu, good to know. And that I don't need the "top of the wave" stuff to have a decent play in spring.

tx again

If you can get it without paying a fortune for it I'd suggest Vista 64bit, aka very cheap or for nothing legally. It seems most Vista driver devs are prioritizing 64bit drivers over 32bit. That and Vista 64bit is not a trainwreck like XP 64bit was...

My previous machine was

Windows XP
GeforceFX 5200
Pentium IV @ 2.8 ghz
512 megs of SDRAM

My new machine is a step up. B)

and not all of us have the means to pay for fancy new computers AF, even self-assembled ones. I earned the laptop i am on now by a lot of hard work at an internship a few weeks ago. So kindly show some respect, asshole.

A64 3000+ (2210MHz)
512+1024MB ram (430MHz)
Ati integrated X300 (2 pipeline, 1 vertex unit)
1280*720 (most of the options is on minimum)

On XP SP2 - 25-30FPS
On Vista Ultimate 64bit - ~25FPS
The game runs well on vista, without any speed problem...

Patch, there's a vista hotfix for virtual memory address space thatl boost that fps, the 2 reliability compat packs too, also running as a standard user with UAC turned off instead fo an admin account frees up more resources for those fps too
