strange drop in fps

Post by webba »

hi everybody,

when playing spring, no matter single or multi-player, the fps frequently drops. it´s not a constantly low framerate but every couple of seconds when scrolling over the map it´s jerking, almost stopping to scroll, for maybe one second then going back to normal. if i dont scroll around everything is fine.
changing all settings to minimum does not help.

athlon xp 2200+
nvidia fx 5900xt ...forceware 91.47
640mb ram

i´d appreciate your help!

do you have the global settings in the nvidia control panel set to stuff like

SUPERSAMPLING
and
16 x AA
and
8x AS (or whatever its abriviated to)

etc...

if so thats whats causing it.

Since he said his framerate wasn't constantly low...no, I don't think so.

That sounds like it's a memory issue. 640MB isn't very much. From the sounds of your system I don't think it's going to be DDR400 either. Try using something like Diskeeper to defragment your page file. Is the problem worse in larger maps?

Asymteric ram is bad. if it isnt 128/256/512/1024/2048/etc then your gonna get less performance and speed than you should.

2x 1Gb is far better than 1x 1GB + 2x 512MB, especially if they're the same make and model

>iamacup: no those settings are app-controlled

>AF: youre right....but would that really cause a slowdown like that?

is there anything else you could think of?

thanks so far...

Exactly what configuration of memory modules do you have? I don't see you can get to 640MB without having say 1x512MB and 1x128MB (can you even get a 1x128MB stick of DDR333?), or you have 768MB and 128MB is being used by the graphics card or something. But 1x512MB and 1x256MB is pretty uncommon and 5900xt should have onboard RAM. :S

i ran a pagefile defrag...the files were not fragmented , so it didnt change performance

conecerning ram: i used to have 2 x 128mb, then uprgraded with one 512mb stick while removing 1x128mb --> 128mb + 512mb = 640mb

5900xt has 128mb
