About the FPS bug

Post by Relinquished »

As many (if not all) of you have noticed, the FPS mode has a bug in it right now where you can't aim between North and West.

This is a fairly large problem to some mods that have been released recently, like Commander Shooter, The Blue Tanks, or my own; Combat Lords.

I'm just seeing how many people think the FPS mode needs to be fixed soon. I've heard that another update for spring isn't planned for 2-6 months, and I really don't want to wait that long.

Your oppinions are, of course, welcome.

My opinion: We don't need a 3rd or 4th FPS bug thread.

Yes we do. It's a serious bug seeing as there are 3 FPS mods out. We need this fixed asap.

I know we don't technically. But this is just a way to show just how many people would like it fixed.

What would you rather get, sync errors and connection dropping fixed or FPS mode fixed? That would be a useful poll, not this. Not that I'd listen to the outcome of such a poll in the first place...

I've never had any sync errors (unless people had the wrong mod/map) or any drops due to spring at all. So unless they MAKE bugs like that in releases I don't know what you're talking about.

...pff, read the forum...

And of course we don't MAKE bugs, we MAKE code, which, inevitably, has/introduces bugs.

Yes, I know how writing code works, but I mean, why can't such obvious bugs like this be fixed before the release? I can see where smaller, less obvious ones might be missed, but just, this one is really obvious. You think developers would test a feature before releasing to the public. And this isn't even an error that only sometimes happens, it happens to everyone, and it's not hard to miss either. Most people notice it within their 1st or 2nd game.

Most definitely the former. I had three games ruined today because of random droppage.

Of course features are tested before releasing them to the public...

However, because there are about 1,000,000,000 small/hidden (combinations of) features in spring, you can't expect us to test every single combination of features/options etc. in our free time.

AKA there are test builds available here, now go test every single feature after every commit and submit patches for bugs (since you know how writing code works).

I actually didn't know about that, I'll consider it.

OK this is off topic, but i found when recording with the version before this version of spring, the fps mode does not seem to behave properly and go inresponsive. I assume because no one reported it, this version of spring might have the same bug, try using a demo of you running around FPS, and then later in the replay try to record a video and you will see the results.

FPV is cool. It's why I love this game. This is the most beautiful RTS I've played, it just didn't impress me much from above. I was about to look elsewhere until I stumbled onto that feature.

I am one little player playing for free though. It's all up to the creators who are doing an incredible job on this. I'll hold my breath if I want to, but I won't bug them. A wise man once told me "When someone offers you a free ride, you don't kick the tires."

Well, yeah, but this bug was known and reported in earlier versions of Spring and was fixed by 0.73. Now I'm no coder so I won't start ranting about "how the hell could you mess up something that was known and fixed before", but truth be told, it is essentially a re-introduced bug. (I'm not blaming anyone for this, just stating a fact. And people, please, let's not piss off the devs OK? :) )

Just for your information, if anyone points me to the original fix or the rev that broke it I'd be happy to commit. Just don't feel like / have time to search through hundreds of SVN revisions atm...

I'm not exactly sure which build fixed the bug. I played version 0.60 (or 0.62, well, something like that, can't remember) until recently, when I got internet access again and downloaded version 0.73, in which the bug was fixed. So it's been fixed somewhere between version 0.60 and 0.73.

And please no, don't sift through hundreds of revisions, it'd be a massive waste of time :)
