I just tried Wii sports an hour ago. It was great, but the one of the remotes stopped working for a while... but a restart fixed that. I hope it's reliable and dosen't stop working when playing Zelda or Red Steel...
Defently needs more Wii and possible other consoles.

It's probably fun the first time... you know what your arm does after 2 hours of shooting bad guys in Virtua Cop with a light gun? It hurts, like fuck.
I expect the same about the wii... and it's not really that great either. It is neither visually outstanding nor anything else, except for the odd controller design which I can't say much about yet... well I prefer PS pads.
On the other hand, neither the 360 nor PS3 are probably worth their money so I'd rather save the money for something more useful... unless you shit gold, then go ahead.

Well, the cool thing about the PS3 is that I *think* it would be possible to use it as a computer, by hooking a keyboard and a mouse and a better hard drive to the usbs. The question would be whether you could get it to run windows programs/games... which you probably could with wine or something. If not now then probably in a year.
Then you would have a supercomputer for <1000. Which would be awesome.

Lindir, don't get your hopes up. The PS3 is such a radically different architecture that you won't get Windows running on it any time soon, not even with WINE. Also, don't get carried away with the "OMG supercomputer" hype. The Cell is powerful, yes, but it's utterly crap at running general purpose code. Also, quad-core will be entering the mainstream before too long and that will drive down the prices of dual-core CPUs until they effectively become the Semprons/Celerons of today.

No, they will be stable and efficient still.El Capitano wrote:Lindir, don't get your hopes up. What would make the Cell so bad at general purpose code?
Yeah, the problem would be issues with windows compatibility... But I suspect that eventually someone will make a windows emulator for the PS3.
It would be cool if there came out a PS3 version of Windows Vista in a few years. I wonder if the additional revenue from selling more copies would offset the additional cost of making it compatible... Probably not. It would depend on how popular the PS3 is.

Every day it sounds like the Wii is less and less 'hardcore' and more 'play for a hour or so with freinds, then come back later'. Not a bad thing, but for a real hardcore PC Gamer...not very attractive. Also I know a few things about arms getting tired holding things, thank you marching band, and that dosn't sound like fun with the Wii controller...
But it still is kinda neat.

Lack of branch prediction, the asymmetric design (1 general purpose processors + 6/7 stream processors), lack of out-of-order execution, to name a few.Lindir The Green wrote:What would make the Cell so bad at general purpose code?
It's extremely unlikely. First of all, there's the issue of porting WINE over. Then, there's the issue of empulating x86 on the Cell. Then, there's the simple fact that performance will suck to the point where a cheap PC will do the job better. After all, it's still years away and PCs have already overtaken the XBox 360 and PS3 in power (general purpose, that is).Yeah, the problem would be issues with windows compatibility... Sony have fucked up this generation something rotten. Even if it got 90% market share, Microsoft wouldn't port Windows simply because its aiding their competitor. It would be cool if there came out a PS3 version of Windows Vista in a few years. Zoombie, the Wii is NOT gimmicky. You can say that about anything that has a feature beyond the basic needs. Ooh, the toaster got a bagel button, how gimmcky. Oooh, the TV got a remote finder beeper, how gimicky.
This is just a new step in the right direction. Like switching from the D-pad to the Analog stick. The Stick ain't gimmicky, it's just usefull and better.

Just look at the DS. People said exactly the same thing about the DS and the PSP would be awesome since the graphics and + features(UMD, MP3, All that crap...)would make the superior to the DS, and a crappy game variety and the UMD (+ high price and frailness) ruined it's chances(Sounds awfully familiar doesnt it?) Now DS is more popular then the PSP... ofcourse, no one knows to what extent, since Sony counts PRODUCED UNITS and not sold units.
(this was the only source of hardware sales i found that was not for 2003. If im wrong, show me your results)
I believe the Wii will be successful. And remember, just because the Wii HAS a feature doesnt mean every company is forced to use it. Behind the initial gimmicky titles for companies that don't "get it" (ala DS) lies an immense new experience. Hopefully companies will realise that and push 3rd party games to the Wii, and it won't go the same way as the Gamecube.
Oh well, Zelda fucking rocks so your gonna buy one anyway.

Worldwide Hardware Sales (End of September 2006)
PS2 - 111.25 million
Xbox - 24.5 to 24.6 million (unofficially estimated)
GameCube - 21.2 million
Xbox 360 - 6 million
Game Boy Advance - 76.79 million
Nintendo DS - 26.82 million
PSP - 22.94 million
Yes, as usual, these are all official manufacturer shipment figures.
The_Joker
If you read their financial reports you'll also see that Sony's shipments are production shipments, that is every unit shipped from the factories. Even the ones currently stored in warehouses count, not just the ones "sold" to retailers.
Quaid
Yeah, Sony sales figures look to be inflated by 25% or more, atleast. Makes you wonder about not only PSP sales, but also PS2.
NFreak
To: chairmansteve
Are those numbers misleading or has the PSP really shipped 19 million units?

Quaid
Sony has manufactured 19 million PSP's, essentially. They could be sitting anywhere. Sony doesn't care, as long as it fluffs up their numbers.
